If you’re thinking about buying, or gifting, an Oura Ring, there’s one question to answer before checkout: do you also want to pay for the membership? The ring is a one-time purchase, but most of what makes it useful sits behind a monthly fee.

The short answer: for most people, yes. Oura Membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and the first month is free. Without it, the ring still shows three daily scores (Readiness, Sleep and Activity), but not the detailed sleep stages, heart data, trends and reports most buyers want. If you dislike subscriptions, there are smart rings that don’t charge one.

Here’s roughly what an Oura Ring 5 at $399 costs over time with the yearly plan, before tax:

  • First year: about $469
  • Two years: about $539
  • Three years: about $609

Paying month to month costs $71.88 a year instead of $69.99. The free first month lowers these totals slightly.

In plain words: without a membership, the Oura Ring gives you a single number for how you slept and how ready you are today, but not the reasons behind it. Oura itself describes the membership as the heart of the Oura experience, not an add-on.

Who doesn’t have to pay

  • Owners of the old Gen2 ring. Oura doesn’t charge them a membership, but many newer features don’t work on Gen2.
  • Gen3 owners with a Lifetime Membership from an earlier promotion. It stays free as long as they keep the same account. You can’t buy one anymore.
  • People who only want a daily score. If a simple sleep and readiness number is enough, the ring works without paying.

Smart rings that don’t need a subscription

If a monthly fee is a dealbreaker, two well-known alternatives don’t require one, according to their makers:

RingUS priceSubscriptionWorks with
Oura Ring 5from $399$5.99/month or $69.99/year for most featuresOura app
Samsung Galaxy Ringfrom $299.99None requiredSamsung Galaxy phones
Ultrahuman Ring PRO$479 with charging caseNone required (optional paid add-ons)Ultrahuman app

The trade-offs: the Galaxy Ring needs a compatible Samsung phone, and Ultrahuman costs more upfront. Over three years, though, an Oura Ring 5 with the yearly plan (about $609) costs more than either. We haven’t compared their accuracy, so read independent reviews before choosing on price alone.

Tips if you’re giving an Oura Ring as a gift

  • Get the size right. Oura offers a free sizing kit, and sizes differ between generations.
  • Remember who pays. The membership is tied to the user’s Oura account, not the ring, so the person you give it to will pay after the free month. You can add a prepaid annual plan when you buy the ring; billing then starts after the prepaid period.
  • Know the return rules. Oura’s online store accepts returns within 30 days of delivery. Returning the ring doesn’t cancel the membership: that has to be done in the app or in Membership Hub.
  • HSA/FSA. In the US, Oura says both the ring and the membership are HSA/FSA eligible.

How to cancel the membership

In the Oura app, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage membership, or use Oura’s Membership Hub. If you cancel during the free month, you aren’t charged. After that, you keep access until the end of the period you paid for, and annual plans aren’t partly refunded. Your data stays saved unless you delete your account, and you can still download it.

Is the Oura membership worth it?

It’s probably worth it if:

  • You want to understand your sleep, recovery, stress or cycle, not just see a score.
  • You’ll actually open the app most days. On the yearly plan it works out to about $5.83 a month.

Think twice if:

  • You only want a step counter or one sleep number.
  • You use a Samsung Galaxy phone and would rather avoid a monthly fee.
  • You already pay for several subscriptions and want to cut back.

FAQ

Can you use an Oura Ring without a subscription? Yes, but only with the basics: the Readiness, Sleep and Activity scores, battery level and app settings. Most detailed insights need a membership.

How much is the Oura membership? $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, with the first month free. In Europe it’s 5.99 euros a month or 69.99 euros a year.

Is the Oura membership HSA/FSA eligible? According to Oura, yes: both the ring and the membership are HSA/FSA eligible, and you can add an HSA or FSA card in Membership Hub.

Does the membership transfer to a new ring? Yes. It’s linked to your Oura account, so it carries over automatically when you pair a new ring.
