ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Should You Use?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the three AI assistants most people end up choosing between. All three can write emails, summarize documents, answer questions, brainstorm ideas and help you plan your week. All three have a free version and a paid plan at around $20 a month.
So which one should you use? The honest answer: it depends less on which one is “smartest” and more on what you do every day and which apps you already use. Here’s a plain-English comparison to help you decide, without the tech jargon.
The short answer: choose Gemini if your life runs on Google (Gmail, Docs, Android) or you want the cheapest paid plan. Choose ChatGPT if you want the most complete all-in-one assistant, with images, video and voice. Choose Claude if you mostly write, read long documents or want an ad-free assistant focused on text. Try the free versions first: you may not need to pay at all.

A few things stand out:
- Gemini is the cheapest way to pay, and its plans include Google cloud storage. If you already pay Google for storage, the AI may cost you very little extra.
- ChatGPT has the widest range of plans, from $8 to $500 a month.
- Claude has no plan below $20, but it offers a discount if you pay for a year.
- For most people, the $20 plans are the real comparison, and all three cost about the same.

What each one does best
ChatGPT: the all-rounder
ChatGPT is the assistant most people try first, and it has the broadest set of features in one app.
Strengths:
- Does almost everything: writing, research, data analysis, image generation, video generation (Sora) and a natural voice mode you can talk to like a person.
- Memory: it can remember your preferences and details from past conversations, so answers become more personal over time.
- Shopping research and everyday help: buyer’s guides, travel planning, recipes, homework help.
- Huge ecosystem: custom GPTs, connectors to other apps and lots of tutorials online, because so many people use it.
Weaknesses:
- Ads are being tested on the Free and Go plans in some regions.
- Limits on paid accounts per device or card: OpenAI recently introduced caps on how many paid accounts can share one device or payment card. Most people won’t notice, but families sharing a laptop might. (See our explainer on the ChatGPT “device limit reached” message.)
- With so many features and models, the app can feel busy for beginners.
Best for: people who want one assistant for everything, including images and voice.
Claude: the writer and reader
Claude, made by Anthropic, has built its reputation on writing quality, careful reasoning and handling long documents.
Strengths:
- Writing: reviewers often describe its writing as natural and less “robotic,” which helps for emails, reports, proposals and anything that will be read by people.
- Long documents: you can upload long PDFs, contracts or reports and ask questions about them.
- Coding and technical work: widely used by developers, through tools like Claude Code.
- Works with your browser and Office: on paid plans, Claude can help inside Chrome and Microsoft 365.
- No ads: Anthropic has committed to keeping Claude ad-free on every plan.
Weaknesses:
- No image or video generation. Claude can look at images you upload, but it can’t create pictures.
- No cheap plan: the first paid tier is $20 a month.
- Usage limits on the free plan reset every few hours, and heavy users can hit them on Pro too.
- Not built into Google apps the way Gemini is.
Best for: professionals who write a lot, read long documents, or want a focused, ad-free assistant.
Gemini: the Google insider
Gemini is Google’s assistant, and its biggest advantage is that it lives inside the apps many people already use every day.
Strengths:
- Built into Google: Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Chrome, Android and Search. It can summarize your emails, draft replies in Gmail or find a file in Drive.
- Cheapest paid plan: $4.99 a month for AI Plus, including 400 GB of storage.
- Handles many types of files at once: text, images, PDFs, audio and video.
- Images and video: it can create images (with Google’s image models) and video (Veo).
- Gemini Live: a free voice mode for natural conversation.
- Shopping tools: price tracking and one cart for many stores through Google. (See our guide to Black Friday deals with AI.)
Weaknesses:
- Model choice on the free plan is automatic: Google decides which version answers you, and the free version uses the lighter models most of the time.
- Its best features are for Google users. If you use Outlook and Microsoft Office, you lose a lot of its advantage.
- Ads aren’t ruled out for the future, even if the app is ad-free today.
Best for: anyone who lives in Gmail, Google Docs and Android, and anyone who wants the lowest price.
Head-to-head: which one for which task?
| Task | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Writing emails and reports | Claude or ChatGPT | Both write well; many find Claude’s tone more natural |
| Working inside Gmail and Google Docs | Gemini | It’s built in |
| Working inside Microsoft Office | Claude or ChatGPT | Both connect to Microsoft 365 on paid plans; Microsoft’s own Copilot is another option |
| Creating images or videos | ChatGPT or Gemini | Claude doesn’t generate images |
| Reading long PDFs and contracts | Claude or Gemini | Both handle long documents well |
| Talking out loud (voice mode) | ChatGPT or Gemini | Both have natural, fast voice modes |
| Planning, recipes, everyday questions | Any of the three | The free versions are enough for most people |
| Cheapest paid plan | Gemini | $4.99/month with storage |
| No ads | Claude | Ad-free commitment on every plan |
Privacy: the setting you should check on all three
On the free and personal plans of all three assistants, your conversations may be used to train future AI models by default. You can turn this off in each app’s settings (look for data controls or privacy settings).
Business and enterprise plans of all three exclude your data from training by default.
Whichever you choose, follow a simple rule: don’t paste passwords, card numbers, medical records or confidential client information into any AI chat unless your company has approved that tool for it.

How to choose in 15 minutes
Don’t pick based on reviews alone. Try all three free versions with the same tasks you actually do. Here’s a quick test:
- An email you need to write this week. Paste a short description and ask for a draft. Which one sounds most like you?
- A document you need to understand. Upload a PDF (a contract, a manual, a report) and ask for a summary and three key points.
- A real-life question. “Plan a week of simple dinners for two, under $80, no fish.”
- A follow-up. Ask each one to change something in its answer. Which one understands you best?
Use the one you enjoyed most for a week. Only pay if you keep hitting the free limits or need a paid feature.
Do you need to pay at all?
Probably not at first. The free versions of all three are good enough for occasional emails, questions and planning. Paying makes sense if:
- You use AI every day for work and keep hitting limits.
- You need a specific paid feature: longer documents, more uploads, deep research, video generation or integrations with your work apps.
- The time saved is worth more than $20 a month. For most professionals, one or two saved hours a month already covers it.
One tip: don’t pay for all three. Pick one main assistant, and use the free versions of the others when you want a second opinion.
FAQ
Which is the smartest: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
All three companies release new models every few months, and the top spot changes often. For everyday tasks, the difference between their best models is small. Features, price and the apps you use matter more.
Which AI is best for small business owners?
If your business runs on Google Workspace, Gemini. If you write a lot of proposals, contracts or client emails, Claude or ChatGPT. Try the free versions with your real tasks before paying.
Is the free version of ChatGPT enough?
For many people, yes. It handles everyday questions, writing and planning. The paid plans add higher limits, more advanced models and extra features.
Can I use more than one?
Yes, and many people do. A common setup is one paid assistant for daily work and the free version of another for a second opinion.
Which one is the most private?
All three let you turn off the use of your chats for training on personal plans, and all three exclude business data by default. Claude has committed to no ads; ChatGPT is testing ads on its cheaper plans.
